DFM Performance 2009
Dubai Financial Market (DFM) overall performance increased by 10.2% to reach 1803.58 points the end of this year compared to 1636.29 points at the end of 2008. The market capitalization decreased in 2009 by 8.4% to reach AED 213.4 billion compared to AED 232.9 billion at the end of last year, which is due primarily to decrease of market capitalization of the non UAE companies listed in DFM and not included in the Dubai Financial Market Index.
The value of shares traded during this year reached AED 173.5 billion, compared to AED 305.2 billion recorded during 2008, a decrease by 43.2%. Number of shares traded increased by 44.7% to reach 110.7 billion shares during this year compared to 76.5 billion shares were traded during the previous year. Number of transactions executed during 2009 decreased by 6.9% to reach 1.984 million compared to 2.131 million deals carried out during the last year.
In terms of sectoral contribution to trading volumes, the real estate and construction sector ranked first in terms of the value of traded shares, to reach AED 100.2 billion, or 57.7% of the total value of shares traded in the market. Investment and financial services ranked second at AED 32 billion, or 18.4%, followed by the transportation sector to AED 16.6 billion, or 9.6%, and the banking sector amounted to AED 12.7 billion, or 7.3%. The insurance sector handled AED 7.2 billion, or 4.1%, and utilities sector amounted 3.7 billion, or 2.1%. Communications sector handled AED 1.2 billion, or 0.7%, and the consumer staples and material sectors ranked last to reach AED 8.4 million and AED 3 million respectively.
The value of stocks bought by institutional investors during this year reached AED 35.708 billion comprising 20.6 per cent of the total value of stocks traded during the period. The value of stocks sold by institutional investors during the same period reached AED 35.531 billion which constitutes 20.5 per cent of the total value of stocks traded during the period. Net institutional investment on the market reached AED 177.4 million during the period, as aggregate buy.
The value of shares bought by foreign investors during this year reached AED 69.909 billion comprising 40.3 per cent of the total value of stocks traded during the period. The value of stocks sold by foreign investors during the same period reached AED 68.502 billion comprising 39.5 per cent of the total value of stocks traded during the period. Net foreign investment on the market reached AED 1.407 billion during the same period, as aggregate buy.
